Bass Geniuses at Work

In a word, WOW!

the only shot I got with all five musicians

the only shot I got with all five musicians

This evening’s extraordinary concert consisted of four bass geniuses and a drummer. Whoever thinks that it would have been a boring show would be quite wrong.

The four bassists were Victor Wooten, who made his name with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones; Steve Bailey, the chair of the bass department at the Berklee College of Music; John Patitucci, who made his name with Chick Corea’s Electric Band; and Victor Bailey, who replaced Jaco Pastorius in Weather Report. And now for something completely different… Theatre!

The day was filled with wonderful live performances – theatre, though, not music (although there was a little music thrown into the mix)!

The day started when I got on line (I’m from New York – we get on line, not in line) at the American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge, Massachusetts at 9:05 a.m. in order to score one of a maximum of $25 standing room tickets for the matinee performance of “All The Way”, a world premiere of a play by Robert Schenkkan about the first year of LBJ’s accidental presidency. Excellent Ticket Friday!

Friday is generally the day of the week when most new concerts go on sale, and today was no exception.

One of my favorite performers, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, is finally going to be back in Boston doing a headlining show! He’s at House of Blues on January 18,2014. Yes, my first concert tickets for 2014 are now in my hands!

A new favorite, The New Orleans Suspects, is going to be at my favorite small venue, Johnny D’s, on Thursday, November 14. The band is composed of members of The Radiators and Dirty Dozen Brass Band, to name a few, and they are awesome performers. I was introduced to them at a New Orleans music festival last summer and hoped they would add a Boston area show to their fall tour.

These are two amazing New Orleans based acts that you should see! Maybe I’ll see you at the shows!

Steely Dan still has ‘it’

sail sail away

friday was a lovely late-summer day – in the high 70s, maybe low 80s – and a clear sky. it was a perfect day to go for a sunset sail on the roseway.
