2016 By The Numbers
Several years ago, a friend suggested I put together some statistics about my year in music. I am continuing the tradition this year, since I saw more shows than ever! At the beginning of the year I said I was going to slow down my concert-going – you can see what happened to that! Eighteen more shows this year than last year and many more sets (mostly due to attending Club Passim’s Campfire Festivals, each of which has close to 80 different performers over the weekend)…
Go out and hear live music! The musicians will be most appreciative! Your mental health will thank you too…
I count each day at a festival as one show although I count each set separately.
53,161 – Number of photographs I took
37,948 – Largest-capacity venue I was in (Fenway Park; it is possible that EarthFest had more people but free outdoor shows don’t count)
1,104 – Miles to the furthest venue (3rd & Lindsley in Nashville)
552 – Number of sets I saw
384 – Different bands I saw
264 – Bands I saw for the first time in 2014
242 – Shows I saw
184 – Most sets I saw in one venue (Club Passim)
170 – Most expensive show I saw (Lead Belly Fest on February 4th at Carnegie Hall)
158 – Number of shows for which I was on the guest list
87 – Age of oldest performer I saw (Tom Paley at Lead Belly Fest on February 4th at Carnegie Hall)
81 – Age of the oldest headlining performer I saw (Sleepy Labeef on January 30th at Johnny D’s)’
68 – Performers I saw more than once
65 – Different venues in which I saw shows
54 – Most shows I saw in one venue (Club Passim – exactly 25% of the shows I saw all year were here)
30 – Smallest-capacity venue I was in (Armory Sound)
28.82 – Average face value of show tickets
22 – Years between last time I saw an artist and the most recent time (Sleepy Labeef)
20 – Venues I was in for the first time in 2014
15 – Age of youngest performer I saw (Jackie Giroux at Club Passim twice)
12.70 – Average out-of-pocket cost of shows (guest list shows included as $0)
7 – Least expensive show I saw that wasn’t a free show (Garrett Lebeau at Atwood’s; there were other shows that had suggested donations)
4 – Most times I saw one band (The Ballroom Thieves, Dietrich Strause, Lula Wiles, The Suffers, The Western Den)
0.35 – Miles to the closest venue (House Concert venue)
0 – Least expensive show I saw, not including shows where I was on the guest list (Several)
