Marvelous Blend of African Music And Jazz

I love both African music and jazz; Felipe Salles integrated the two styles to create something new and exhilarating!

Felipe and his band held a CD release show at Regattabar last night and I was fortunate to be in the audience for the excellent show.

An Excellent Jazz Performance At Alternate Root TV

On Friday night, I had the privilege of seeing the Brad Ellenberg Quintet in an Extended Play Session at Alternate Root TV.

This was the first jazz event at the Sessions and I was looking forward to being a part of it.

AJ Croce Crosses Genres

When I heard that A.J. Croce was appearing at Regattabar last week, I knew I needed to attend his show.

A.J. Croce

A.J. Croce

Yes, he is the son of Jim Croce who was one of the singer-songwriters I loved in my teens (and who died tragically in a plane crash at the age of 30). A.J., however, has a style that I find very different from his father’s pop/folk-rock style.

Terrific Intimate Blues Performance

What a treat it was to see Janiva Magness and Xenia Dunford in such an intimate setting as Extended Play at Alternate Root TV!

I will fully describe the venue and the Sessions in another post, but suffice it to say that this venue imitates your living room, both for the artist and the audience.

Dancing The Night Away With The Mavericks

Yes, I saw The Mavericks two nights in a row – they are that good!

Sunday night’s show was at The Wilbur which afforded me a different experience than the previous evening did. The floor was general admission standing, so I decided to stand at the stage rather than sit in the front row of the mezzanine. I am so glad I did.

The Mavericks Hosted A Dance Party!

The Mavericks were one of my top ten concerts of 2013 and I could not wait to see them again, now that I know their music much better.

The Mavericks

The Mavericks

I thought this would be a different experience considering The Capitol Center for the Arts is a seated venue, but I was wrong. There was as much energy coming from the band and the audience as there was at the show I saw last year (the demographic was generally older than I see at most other concerts I attend). ‘Sugar Man’, Alive And Well At Boston’s Orpheum Theatre

Finally, I scored a ticket to see Sixto Rodriguez, the enigmatic subject of the film ‘Searching for Sugar Man‘! I became aware of Rodriguez two years ago and have been trying since then.

He has been playing to ever-increasing audience sizes, so instead of seeing him at an intimate venue such as Johnny D’s where he played 18 months ago, I saw him at the Orpheum Theatre which is not huge but is not intimate either.

A Wonderfully Perfect Jazz Storm

There are times – they don’t occur often – when every aspect of an evening converges to produce perfection. Last night’s Kevin Harris Project show at Regattabar provided such an evening.

Kevin Harris

I was not familiar with Kevin Harris. To be honest, I had a hole in my schedule that I wanted to fill with some good music, and this show sounded intriguing. That is quite an understatement!

Suzanne Vega, Eclectic Singer-Songwriter, Performs

While I cannot say I closely followed her career, I have enjoyed Suzanne Vega for many years.

I decided to see Suzanne who is touring in support of her recent release, ‘Tales from the Realm of the Queen of Pentacles’, for my first foray to The Center for the Arts in Natick, a small venue in a former firehouse. Read the rest of this entry

Lovely Mellow (In A Good Way) Show At The Paradise

The Milk Carton Kids (MCK) are riding high, in part due to their talent and in part from their appearance in ‘Another Day, Another Time‘ (the documentary about the New York City concert that presented the music of ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’).

The Milk Carton Kids

The Milk Carton Kids

Last night, they performed to a sold-out crowd at The Paradise Rock Club, a venue not known for presenting folk acts. Hopefully they will consider adding similar acts (and MCK again, although I predict they will be booking larger venues) after MCK’s stellar performance. Read the rest of this entry
