I am pleased to announce that Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers will be appearing at the Lowell Summer Music Series on Friday, August 14! I enjoyed his past two performances there, but the last was in 2008 so he’s been overdue for a return trip to the Series.

Kyle Eastwood Delivered A Solid Performance

Kyle Eastwood, a talented jazz bassist and composer, is not merely trading on his family name (yes, his father is Clint). I took a chance when I decided to see him perform at Regattabar last week, and I am delighted I did.

I did not know, but should have realized, that Kyle was raised with much music in his life and it shows. He clearly has a passion for the jazz tradition.

Blues With A West African Twist

I was surprised that I was not familiar with Markus James prior to his electrifying performance at The Extended Play Sessions recently; I love African music, and West African in particular, and Markus’ music is heavily based in the music from that part of the world.

This is a form of the blues that is fairly unique. It is not desert blues, although I could hear elements of it (okay, more than merely elements) in Markus’ music. It is not Delta or Chicago blues, although I could also hear elements of those styles. It is hard-driving, percussive blues that will make you move.

It Was A Good Night for (Mostly) Traditional Bluegrass

Last summer, I enjoyed seeing The Gibson Brothers at the Freshgrass Festival (an amazing bluegrass festival, for those of you who are interested) so much that when their recent show at Johnny D’s was announced, I knew I had to see them again.

It was a bonus to find Twisted Pine, winner of the Freshgrass best band contest, opening the show for the Gibsons.
