The scent of ‘sugar… butter… flour… love…’ was in the air as I entered the American Repertory Theater last night.
I first read about ‘Waitress’, a musical based on the 2007 film of the same title, early last winter when it was announced that Diane Paulus would direct, Sara Bareilles would compose the music and lyrics, and Jessie Nelson would write the book.
I, for one, did not imagine that the story of a young actor traveling to Uganda to do humanitarian work would make good musical theatre (I had a similar thought when “Pippin” – the story about Charlemagne’s son – was first produced on Broadway in 1972 and look what happened there). I was thrilled to be proven wrong last night when I attended a preview of “Witness Uganda” at the American Repertory Theatre. Read the rest of this entry
