Jazz Doesn’t Get Much Better Than This

Stanley Clarke is one of my favorite jazz musicians, and the opportunity to see him at Tupelo Music Hall could not be overlooked.

We had no idea what band Stanley would have with him that night, but it did not matter – Stanley is fabulous in any iteration!

This Was Indeed Global Jazz!

What an evening of excellent jazz! Danilo Perez was the headliner of several shows at Scullers Jazz Club last weekend, and we were fortunate to be in the audience for one of those shows.

Danilo is Panamanian and divides his time these days between Boston and Panama; Boston is very lucky to have him at least part of the time. On his own, Danilo is a global performer! Read the rest of this entry

An Exciting Jazz Performance!

I have been re-discovering live jazz over the past few months after a brief vacation and am thrilled that I have, because I’m seeing performers of the ilk of Lenny White! Part of what made this night special was that it was the inaugural concert in a new series that Berklee is staging at Scullers Jazz Club.

Lenny has been performing for more than forty years – in fact, the first time I saw Return to Forever in 1974 (where I sat on the floor right next to Chick Corea) Lenny was the drummer – and he is a master. Read the rest of this entry

Soaring Afro-Cuban Jazz Concert

I was minimally familiar with Roy Hargrove before this show at Scullers, but all I needed to know was that his style has been Afro-Cuban with forays into funk, hip-hop, and bop. Afro-Cuban is arguably my favorite form of jazz so I was all in for this show.

I apologize for the darkness of the photos; I was sitting very close to the stage, which was perfect for sound and the view, but not so perfect for photos. Read the rest of this entry

Funky/Jazzy Evening at Scullers

This show was another unexpected pleasure for me.  The Matt Wilson Quartet was performing with special guest John Medeski, who I knew and enjoyed when I saw him perform with Medeski Martin & Wood.

A Jazz Saxophone Treasure

I had never seen David Sanborn perform; when we noticed he was doing several shows at Scullers, we had to go. We had another show to attend earlier in the evening, so we rushed to Scullers for his 10 pm show. I generally prefer the late show for jazz; the band is completely warmed up and is generally looser for the later set.

We got there a few minutes after the show started, but the audience was already fully engaged. One of the things I love about jazz audiences is that they tend to be very respectful of the musicians.  Read the rest of this entry

Mehliana – What an Incredible Show!

I had no idea what to expect from Mehliana‘s show – mainly because they have not yet released any recordings together (their first will be released in January)! The only thing I expected was jazz, and I got that and more.

Bass Geniuses at Work

In a word, WOW!

the only shot I got with all five musicians

the only shot I got with all five musicians

This evening’s extraordinary concert consisted of four bass geniuses and a drummer. Whoever thinks that it would have been a boring show would be quite wrong.

The four bassists were Victor Wooten, who made his name with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones; Steve Bailey, the chair of the bass department at the Berklee College of Music; John Patitucci, who made his name with Chick Corea’s Electric Band; and Victor Bailey, who replaced Jaco Pastorius in Weather Report.
