My Top Ten Shows From a Stellar Music Year
I ‘only’ saw 172 shows last year, which is the lowest number since 2013 (it was late in 2013 that I started this website). Nevertheless, it still made choosing my top ten shows difficult.
As always, I do not include sets from festivals because the energy at a festival adds so much to an artist’s performance that it is unfair to compare festival sets to ‘regular’ shows. This year, however, I make mention of some sets at festivals that were especially fabulous.
Old Crow Medicine Show Does Dylan Better Than Dylan
Is that a sacrilegious statement? Possibly, but even the most ardent fans of Bob Dylan (and specifically of his seminal album Blonde on Blonde) have to admit that Dylan’s vocals have never been what drew his fans to him.
Old Crow Medicine Show, a band that reveres Dylan, is currently touring to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the release of Blonde on Blonde. They may be putting their bluegrass/Americana spin on the songs, but there is no doubt they are paying homage to one of the greatest songwriters of all time.

Another Wonderful Evening of Americana Music
Large arenas like TD Garden are not the best places to see acoustic music. Sometimes, though, this type of band gets too popular for smaller venues, and that’s the case with the Avett Brothers and Old Crow Medicine Show.
I saw both bands perform at the 2013 Newport Folk Festival and was extremely impressed with Old Crow so I was especially glad to be seeing them again. Read the rest of this entry
