Sherwood Forest Never Looked Better!
I love good theatre – I grew up in New York where there was never a dearth of quality shows to see. Boston’s theatre scene is on a much smaller scale, but one things we do have that’s high-quality is the American Repertory Theater. The shows being produced this season range from the story of LBJ’s first year as president to a production of ‘The Tempest’ with Teller doing magic. The current production, which I saw in preview, is ‘The Heart of Robin Hood.’
This play is a re-imagining of the legend of Robin Hood – I am not going to tell the story because I don’t want to spoil it for any of you who may see it. And see it you should! Read the rest of this entry
A Night of Unexpected Enjoyment
You know how ‘they’ say that if you have no expectations, you won’t have any disappointments? I try, but don’t always succeed, to approach every art experience that way.
Last Thursday, I scored a couple of tickets to see Chris Trapper, who I have seen perform a few times, and other bands that were completely unfamiliar to me, at Red Star Union, a venue I first heard about a week ago.
Here’s A Wonderful New Speaker!
A couple of weeks ago, I blogged about the amazing Preservation Hall Jazz Band show at The Sinclair, which was sponsored by Grain Audio. Grain Audio is a new company which currently makes four products, all with wood in place of some of the plastic – in-ear headphones, over-ear headphones, a portable wireless speaker, and a passive bookshelf system.

The Music of Muscle Shoals, Alabama Socked it to Me!
Amy Black, a Boston-based singer-songwriter who I’ve seen perform several times, assembled a number of other Boston-based musicians for an evening called “Sock It To Me”, a celebration of the musical heritage of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, at Atwood’s Tavern.
I knew about Muscle Shoals, but didn’t realize how many amazing musicians had recorded there. Read the rest of this entry
Good Art Won’t Match Your Sofa – Fred Babb
This weekend has comprised mostly art, not music, and it’s one of my favorite weekends of the year.
Friday night, I traveled to Demarest, New Jersey for the 39th Annual Pottery Show and Sale at The Art School at Old Church. Saturday was the Holiday Sale by alumni of the Rhode Island School of Design. They are very different shows/sales with the same purpose – to put high-quality handmade objects in our hands and our homes.

Bombino is Da Bomb!!!
Seeing Bombino perform Sunday night at The Sinclair was an amazing way to end the long Thanksgivukkah weekend!
This was not the first time I’d seen Bombino. Early last year, I saw him at Johnny D’s which was a fabulous venue for him, and last summer I caught a few numbers from his set at Newport Folk Festival. He just gets better and better, and I sense he’s becoming more comfortable in his role as an international ambassador of desert blues music. I will see him any time he’s in the area!
