We Were Taken To The River And Beyond

There is so much history in the Memphis music scene, and three of the elder statesmen of that scene headlined a stupendous show titled Take Me to the River at the Parker Playhouse over the past weekend.

These three gentlemen – William Bell, Bobby Rush, and Don Bryant – are 78, 84, and 75 years of age, respectively, but none of them show any signs of slowing. We were in the presence of music royalty and we knew it. And we appreciated it!

Storytelling And Songs Presented By A Master

Everybody knows at least one of Jimmy Webb‘s songs even though they may not know his name. That was not the case with the full audience at Crest Theatre at Old School Square where everyone did know his name.

Jimmy Webb

We were rewarded with a great evening of both stories and songs, mostly from his earlier days as a songwriter.

Songwriting Master To Perform in Delray Beach

I am a long-time fan of Jimmy Webb, at least since the first time I heard ‘MacArthur Park’ in 1967-68. It was my then-boyfriend and my ‘song’ because of the reference to a ‘yellow cotton dress’!

I have never seen him perform, but I am remedying that situation on January 24th at Crest Theatre at Old School Square in Delray Beach, and you can too by clicking here to buy tickets! Tickets are $57 reserved/$77 premium; $408 premium club seating (via box office only) – 561.243.7922.

2017 By The Numbers

Several years ago, a friend suggested I put together some statistics about my year in music. I am continuing the tradition once again, despite not seeing as many shows last year! At the beginning of the year I said I was going to slow down my concert-going and unfortunately because I was forced to relocate from a fabulous music city to one that is less so, I saw fewer shows than I had since 2013… Sad face…

Go out and hear live music! The musicians will be most appreciative! Your mental health will thank you too…

My Top Ten Shows From a Stellar Music Year

I ‘only’ saw 172 shows last year, which is the lowest number since 2013 (it was late in 2013 that I started this website). Nevertheless, it still made choosing my top ten shows difficult.

As always, I do not include sets from festivals because the energy at a festival adds so much to an artist’s performance that it is unfair to compare festival sets to ‘regular’ shows. This year, however, I make mention of some sets at festivals that were especially fabulous.

Newport Folk Festival Hits A Grand Slam!

Then again, it always does for me and the 10,000 others who buy tickets before the first artist is announced for the Newport Folk Festival (NFF)! The 2018 NFF is already sold out, but you can join the fan-to-fan ticket exchange where tickets are resold at face value – get yourself on the list!

Jay Sweet announcing the first set of the 2017 NFF

We trust in Jay Sweet and everyone who selects the artists who perform at NFF. Every year I discover at least one new artist with whom I fall in love, and this year was no exception! In case you don’t read all the way to the end, there is one important point I want to make. Yes, NFF is about the music but it is also about the Folk Family. I have made so many friends at NFF over the six years I have attended, and we all share a love of the music and the community. From the photographers with whom I share the photo pit and the media tent to the folk fans and the great friends I have made, you are what keep me going back! It is a beautiful thing!
