On Saturday, August 28, catch Ivor Novello Award-winning and Grammy Award-nominated music legend Richard Thompson. Then on Saturday, September 4, Lowell Summer Music favorite Rhiannon Giddens returns. Finally, on Friday, September 17, don’t miss feminist icon and Grammy-winner Ani DiFranco.
It’s been a very long 14 months for all of us, not only lovers of live music. We are excited to announce that the Lowell Summer Music Series will be able to present a season of live music this summer. Based on current federal guidelines, they are not sure when Boarding House Park will be cleared to host full-capacity events. The intention is to host all events at Boarding House Park if it is permitted, but they have secured Lowell Memorial Auditorium as a back-up location to ensure there will be live music in downtown Lowell this summer!Read the rest of this entry
I cannot tell you how excited I am that Rhiannon Giddens is returning to the Lowell Summer Music Series on September 5th! She is one of my favorite performers, regardless of the iteration, and I missed her previous appearance at the Series due to a bout of temporary insanity that caused me to move away from Boston!
Yes, friends, the Lowell Summer Music Series starts its stellar 29th season tomorrow, Thursday, June 13th! This weekend promises three incredible shows – I’ve seen all the artists (except Sunday night’s opener) perform multiple times and attendees are in for a treat each night as well as the rest of the summer.
Rhiannon Giddens embarked on her first solo tour several months ago. She achieved much success as a co-founder of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, but her reputation exploded through a couple of projects in which she participated over the last two years: the Another Day, Another Time concert, a celebration of the music that inspired the film Inside Llewyn Davis, and The New Basement Tapes, a collaboration that set newly found Bob Dylan lyrics to music.
Rhiannon mentioned that this show at the Somerville Theatre was originally billed as a Carolina Chocolate Drops show; I would have seen the show either way, but I am glad it was her show.
