An Intimate Evening With A Rock Legend

Despite a number of really good shows happening in Boston on this snowy evening, I chose to see the legendary Leon Russell in the intimate setting that is Johnny D’s.

Leon Russell

Walking with the aid of a cane, Leon took the stage to a standing ovation. Graciously acknowledging the love we showed him, he sat at his grand piano and played his heart out for the next nearly two hours.

Garth Brooks Triumphs In Boston

Seventeen years had passed since Garth Brooks performed in Boston; for about half of them, he was retired from music. At the end of January, he triumphantly returned to give us six sold-out (or nearly sold-out) shows at TD Garden.

One look at Garth’s face tells you all you need to know – that he was thrilled with the reception he received!

Barnstar! Has Earned That Exclamation Point!

Barnstar! is one the most enjoyable acts to see live, and their recent CD release show at OBERON drove that point home to the sold-out audience.

Barnstar!

Barnstar!

Barnstar! (yes, the exclamation point is part of the name) is a bluegrass band based in the Boston area. They do not tour often, but when they do it would behoove you to see them.

Regattabar was a Roomful of Blues!

I had not seen Roomful of Blues in about twenty years, and even though the members of the band have changed in that time, the band’s roots are the same. Their recent appearance at Regattabar showed that they continue to be worth seeing.

What a history Roomful of Blues has! Founded 48 years ago, this Rhode Island based band plays horns-heavy Chicago blues with swing and Cajun mixed in for good measure.

Three Powerhouse Guitarists Amazed At The Narrows

I was a very lucky person to be able to see the first of the David Bromberg, Larry Campbell, and David Hidalgo shows which was held at The Narrows Center for the Arts recently.

I apologize that my photos are not as good as usual; there were a lot of mics on stage that proved tough to shoot around.

Newport Folk Festival Started The 2015 Rolling Lineup Announcements

I’m still a relative newcomer to the Newport Folk Festival, compared to friends who have been attending for 20+ years. The first year I attended was 2012 and I think it will be a part of my life for years to come.

For the past couple of years, NFF decided to do rolling announcements of the lineup rather than announcing the entire lineup at the same time. It’s part frustrating (because I want to know NOW) but mostly exciting (who’s going to be announced NEXT).
