Yowza, What an Incredible Jazz Fusion Show!

It has been a long time (nearly 40 years) since I have seen the incomparable jazz drummer Billy Cobham perform his own music, so I was more than ready to enjoy his show at Regattabar last night. Not only did I enjoy the show, but I was in awe of the performances.

Billy played with Ron Carter when I saw Ron’s show six months ago; as Billy stated, that was fun but this night would be most special for him because the band would be playing his (and his band members) music. Special indeed!

Triple-Header Singer-Songwriter Show

This summer, the Lowell Summer Music Series presented a few new types of shows for us. One of them, a slate of three singer-songwriters, was held on another glorious evening last month. Heather Maloney, Adam Ezra, and Ben Taylor were the musicians we saw.

Another Evening of Great Blues

When Regattabar announced a show by the legendary Coco Montoya, I knew I would finally be able to see him perform. I became aware of him about twenty years ago but for some unknown reason I never got myself to one of his shows.

Seth Walker’s Wonderfully Gritty Blues

Last night, I headed to Atwood’s Tavern to hear Seth Walker, a blues guitarist and songwriter currently based in New Orleans who previously lived in Austin and Nashville (three of the greatest music scenes in the US). I saw Seth open for The Mavericks about eighteen months ago, just him and his guitar, and was excited to see this show on his schedule.

Seth is an engaging performer who deserves to have larger audiences than he had last night at his first headlining show in the Boston area. The small crowd was treated to a show in which Seth gave us everything he has, pouring out his heart as if this was a sold-out show.

Peter Wolf Delivers Classic Blues

Peter Wolf, former front man of the J. Geils Band and disc jockey at defunct Boston FM radio station WBCN (it is now digital only), delivered an action-packed performance on another lovely night under the stars at the Lowell Summer Music Series.

It Was a Fabulous Bluesy Soulful Funky Night in Lowell

JJ Grey & Mofro is a band that I had not seen until their performance at the Lowell Summer Music Series last month, but it was not due to a lack of desire.

I saw JJ perform as part of the Southern Soul Assembly, an acoustic quartet with JJ, Luther Dickinson, Anders Osborne, and Marc Broussard, in a show that will probably end up as one of the top ten shows of my concert year, but I had never seen him with his own band.

An Evening at a Rare Jazz Performance

When I decided to spend an evening at Regattabar listening to the Swallow Talmor Nussbaum Trio, I had no idea that I was in for a rare treat.

Composed of Steve Swallow on bass, Ohad Talmor on saxophone and Adam Nussbaum on drums, this trio does not perform often so I knew I had to see this show.

Stellar Three-Part Harmonies from Red Molly

Last week, I attended another wonderful taping of an Extended Play Session at Alternate Root TV. This night, Red Molly gave us an intimate look into their music and process.
