The Incomparable Vince Gill And Lyle Lovett Shine In A Rare Duo Show
I knew we would be treated to an intimate experience with Vince Gill and Lyle Lovett at the Capitol Center for the Arts when I saw the stage was set with two chairs, two mics, and a guitar rack. And, oh yes, a small table between the chairs. It was as if they were in their living room.
Lyle has toured as a duo, trio, and quartet with the likes of Guy Clark, John Hiatt, and Joe Ely, but I believe this is the first time he has toured with Vince in this format. They did only a small handful of dates (either three or four as I recall the tour schedule), and judging by the show I saw, it was a resounding success.
Funk/Reggae Rocked The House!
This was not the first time The Extended Play Sessions hosted The Get Right Band, a funk/reggae/rock trio from Asheville, North Carolina, so we knew to expect a dance party. Little did we know that more people would be on their collective feet for most of the show!
As I write this, knowing the band will return in the fall for a third show, I feel that The Get Right Band is our ‘house’ band. We are all comfortable with one another and that is evident in their performance.
The Beehive Queen Captured Our Hearts
We gathered at the Extended Play Sessions for a special event – Christine Ohlman and Rebel Montez performing at a fundraiser for the space to which The Extended Play Sessions is moving. What a fabulous (and hopefully successful) evening was had by all!
Christine had the audience exactly where she wanted us from the first notes that emanated from her mouth!
Darlingside Is A Hit At The Armory
When I was introduced to Darlingside a couple of years ago at the Outside the Box Festival (an incredible free festival which is returning to Boston this summer), I remarked that I had discovered my new favorite band. I now see them whenever I can, most recently at Arts at the Armory. Yes, it’s an old armory which has been converted to an up-and-coming arts center.
This Boston-based band has developed a devoted following over the past few years that I have no doubt will continue to grow as they headline larger venues; this show was promoted by Bowery Boston which I hope will prove to be a lucrative relationship for Darlingside.
Julian Lage And His Guitar Never Cease To Amaze
My review of this show can be read on No Depression.
Grammy-Winner Shelby Lynne Enchants
Shelby Lynne may have made her name as a country musician, but her performance at Johnny D’s a few days ago showed that she is a versatile singer-songwriter who is firmly ensconced in the broader category of American roots music.
This was the first stop on Shelby’s tour to promote her new album, I Can’t Imagine, produced by Massachusetts’ own Rounder Records and released two days prior to this show.
