Fabulous American Roots Music Triple Play

You would think I had enough music last weekend at the Newport Folk Festival that I might need a bit of a break, but you would be mistaken! I’m not sure I could ever hear too much Americana music, so I headed over to T.T. The Bear’s Place for this fabulous triple bill.

Spirit Family Reunion

Spirit Family Reunion

Two of the three acts I saw this night – The Deslondes and Willy Gantrim – were at Newport this year (although I did not see them except when they sat in for other sets) while Spirit Family Reunion, the headliner, was at the Festival the previous two years.

Initial Musings On Newport Folk Festival 2014

This year’s Newport Folk Festival has been ‘in the can’ for about 18 hours. I have not yet looked at my photos in depth, but wanted to get something out for those who were there as well as those who weren’t.

This year had some stellar moments as always, as I have come to expect.

Fascinating Pandeiro Jazz Show

I did not know what a pandeiro was when I booked this show, but the idea of hearing a Brazilian percussion instrument alongside guitar and piano playing music that combines Brazilian music and jazz fascinated me.

Scott Feiner & Pandeiro Jazz performed at Regattabar last weekend to an enthusiastic audience.

A Night of Great Heavy Blues

I had not attended an Extended Play Session at Alternate Root TV in what felt like a very long time (in reality it was only a month), and was excited to be seeing Trampled Under Foot on Monday night.

Another band with which I was familiar in name only, Kansas City-based TUF (as they are known) has won blues awards going back about twelve years so I am not sure how my radar missed them. Unfortunately, the band announced recently that they are not going to perform together after the end of this year but will each pursue separate careers. Darn!

A Rollicking Great Time With Barenaked Ladies

I expected to enjoy this show by the Barenaked Ladies at the Lowell Summer Music Series on another Saturday night with great weather, but I was not prepared to be blown away!

I knew their biggest hits so I knew they were funny, but I honestly did not realize how good their musicianship is.

Alternative Roots Music at Extended Play Session on Thursday, July 24

There is another Extended Play session at Alternate Root TV on Thursday, July 24th. Spuyten Duyvil, an alternative roots band from New York, will be gracing the stage in Norwood.

The band has this to say:  “Hailing from the Hudson Valley, Spuyten Duyvil’s (pronounced “SPITE-en DIE-vil”) soaring vocals, traditional jug-band energy, slide guitar and Chicago-style blues harp propel the listener on a barn-burning romp through the last 100 years of American Roots music. “They are the hottest new band in folk music … and one of the best”, says legendary WXPN Folk DJ, Gene Shay. According to WFMT-Chicago’s Rich Warren, listening to this joyous band for the first time is like “throwing a cherry bomb into a lake”. It wakes you up.”

The Alternate Root is pleased to host a special night of filming featuring Spuyten Duyvil on Thursday, July 24, 2014. Doors are at 6PM and you can be included (for a $25 donation) by contacting us via e-mail through studioconcertseries@gmail.com.

Located just 25 minutes from downtown Boston and free parking! How can you go wrong with that???

Heavy Blues at an Extended Play Session

Sorry for the late notice – there’s an Extended Play Session at Alternate Root TV tonight!

Trampled Under Foot saw changes in their all-sibling lineup as a trio in 2014.  When brother Kris announced he was leaving the band, Danielle and Nick solicited long-time friend and fellow KC musician Jan Faircloth to join them on drums. Jan brought with him years of experience as a musician in the Kansas City blues scene and provided a fresh take on the band’s trademark sound. The addition of Jan inspired Trampled Under Foot to make other changes in their line up and the group added keyboardist Mike “Shinetop” Sedovic as an official member, turning the trio in to a 4-piece powerhouse blues band and adding a new dimension to their already stellar live performance that Trampled Under Foot will be bringing to The Alternate Root.

The Alternate Root is pleased to host a special night of filming featuring Trampled Under Foot on Monday, July 21, 2014. Doors are at 6PM and you can be included by contacting us via e-mail through studioconcertseries@gmail.com.
