An American Songster Enchants
The weather was not perfect (rain was threatening), but the setting was. A large crowd gathered in the Museum of Fine Arts‘ courtyard to see Dom Flemons perform for the first concert of the 2014 Concerts in the Courtyard series.
Dom defines songster as someone who plays and sings, and that certainly describes him. He does not describe himself as a musicologist, yet he is extremely knowledgeable about the history of American and African-American roots music; he obviously enjoys educating his audiences because he does it quite well.
Neko Case Performance In Lowell Was Another Winner For The Series
This is another review that is difficult for me to write since I was not familiar with Neko Case‘s music prior to attending the concert at the Lowell Summer Music Series last weekend.
This review will not contain photographs (other than the photo above which was shot in the afternoon well before the show started) due to Neko’s extraordinarily restrictive photo policy.
Lucinda Felt Our Love
Many of us in attendance at last weekend’s Lucinda Williams show at the Lowell Summer Music Series remember her last performance there. Thankfully, Lucinda made a triumphant return to Boarding House Park!
Lucinda is in a much better place in her life now and that showed in her fine performance.
The Piano Man Rules!
I was excited to see Billy Joel in concert at Fenway Park last night; it was my first time seeing him at his own show since 1977. I did see him with Elton John in 1994 on the first ‘dueling pianos’ tour but that wasn’t only his music.
This was a wonderful concert! Billy was firing on all cylinders and had the crowd hanging onto his every note.
I apologize up front for the less-than-usual quality of the photos; I was far back on the field. Many of the shots are of the big screen.
It Was A Rocking Soulful Show
It was another glorious evening at Boarding House Park with Amos Lee appearing as part of the Lowell Summer Music Series.
This was Amos’ second appearance at the Series and he was obviously happy to be back there.
Delta Rae Was a WOW!!!
Delta Rae, a roots rock band from Durham, North Carolina, appeared at the Lowell Summer Music Series last weekend for the first but hopefully not last time.
This was another show that I attended not having any idea what to expect other than a good time. Read the rest of this entry
Fly Rasta With Ziggy Marley!
Ziggy Marley is a reggae artist who can appeal to almost anyone, whether or not you’re a fan of reggae. He appeared at the Lowell Summer Music Series last week to open their 25th anniversary season, and it was a great way to start the summer!
If it is possible to be both high energy and mellow, Ziggy has mastered that.
As If Willie Nelson and Alison Krauss Weren’t Enough…
I had fairly high expectations seeing Willie Nelson for the first time and Alison Krauss and Union Station for (I believe) the second time, and the reality far surpassed them!
The Blue Hills Bank Pavilion is not my favorite venue (the sound is uneven at best), but even that was not enough to negatively impact the show. Read the rest of this entry
Local Folk Singer-Songwriter Performed A Lovely Set
Kris Delmhorst is fairly well-known in the local (Massachusetts) music scene, but I had not seen her perform until last week at the Extended Play Sessions at Alternate Root TV.
Kris’ style is described as folk and American roots, which I believe is accurate. Read the rest of this entry
Lowell Summer Music Series 25th Anniversary Season Starts Tonight!
I’m very excited that the Lowell Summer Music Series is starting tonight, and the weather forecast is awesome!
This weekend’s shows are Ziggy Marley, Delta Rae, and Amos Lee!
