This Show Did Not Excite Me
Some of you have asked what I would do if I attended I show that I did not like. Now you have your answer!
I was dragged (not quite kicking and screaming) to see G. Love and Special Sauce at House of Blues last week. The person who was supposed to go was stuck in Georgia because of the snow/ice storm and we did not want to waste a ticket. Being extremely open-minded about music, I hoped that this show would surprise me. Read the rest of this entry
The Autumn Defense Heated Up a Winter Night
Seeing The Autumn Defense was a great way to get warm on a chilly, pre-storm evening!
They played to a small (100 people, I’d guess) but enthusiastic crowd at Great Scott last Wednesday night. Read the rest of this entry
There’s No Grumbling About These Gramblers!
Walking into The Sinclair last night, I had bit of an inkling of what to expect from Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers because I’d seen the recording of their set at the Newport Folk Festival. That video, however, did not truly prepare me for the energy and quality of the show.
From the moment the band took the stage, I was enthralled. Maybe rapt is a better word.
An Exciting Jazz Performance!
I have been re-discovering live jazz over the past few months after a brief vacation and am thrilled that I have, because I’m seeing performers of the ilk of Lenny White! Part of what made this night special was that it was the inaugural concert in a new series that Berklee is staging at Scullers Jazz Club.
Lenny has been performing for more than forty years – in fact, the first time I saw Return to Forever in 1974 (where I sat on the floor right next to Chick Corea) Lenny was the drummer – and he is a master. Read the rest of this entry
Newport Folk Festival Starts Rolling Lineup Announcements
I’m a relative newcomer to the Newport Folk Festival. The first year I attended was 2012 and I think it will be a part of my life for years to come.
Last year (I believe), NFF decided to do rolling announcements of the lineup rather than announcing the entire lineup at the same time. It’s part frustrating (because I want to know NOW) but mostly exciting (who’s going to be announced NEXT).
Resurrect People is the Message of “Witness Uganda”
I, for one, did not imagine that the story of a young actor traveling to Uganda to do humanitarian work would make good musical theatre (I had a similar thought when “Pippin” – the story about Charlemagne’s son – was first produced on Broadway in 1972 and look what happened there). I was thrilled to be proven wrong last night when I attended a preview of “Witness Uganda” at the American Repertory Theatre. Read the rest of this entry
Serious Funk and Sweet Soul Music Ruled the Night
By now my regular readers should know how much I love music from New Orleans, so the fact that I went to see Galactic at the House of Blues should not be a surprise.
Galactic has been around for twenty years. The core group is five musicians with a revolving cast of guests. On this tour, they have Maggie Koerner singing and Corey Henry playing trombone. Read the rest of this entry

Susan Cattaneo Penned My New Anthem
I first heard of Susan Cattaneo when she performed in the music of Muscle Shoals, Alabama show last December. I was quite impressed when I heard her perform songs written by others; I am even more impressed with Susan’s songwriting, as evidenced by her newly-released album, “Haunted Heart”.
Susan is a songwriting professor at Berklee College of Music. This is the first album for which she wrote all of the songs, and it’s stunning. Read the rest of this entry
Soul Queen Bettye LaVette Amazes!
A friend told me that Bettye LaVette brought her to tears at a concert last year and that impressed me, so I was very excited to see her perform at Johnny D’s last night.
This was a monumental show! She poured her heart and soul into each note than emanated from her and the very large crowd appreciated every one of them!
