Another Evening of Great Blues

When Regattabar announced a show by the legendary Coco Montoya, I knew I would finally be able to see him perform. I became aware of him about twenty years ago but for some unknown reason I never got myself to one of his shows.

Seth Walker’s Wonderfully Gritty Blues

Last night, I headed to Atwood’s Tavern to hear Seth Walker, a blues guitarist and songwriter currently based in New Orleans who previously lived in Austin and Nashville (three of the greatest music scenes in the US). I saw Seth open for The Mavericks about eighteen months ago, just him and his guitar, and was excited to see this show on his schedule.

Seth is an engaging performer who deserves to have larger audiences than he had last night at his first headlining show in the Boston area. The small crowd was treated to a show in which Seth gave us everything he has, pouring out his heart as if this was a sold-out show.

It Was a Fabulous Bluesy Soulful Funky Night in Lowell

JJ Grey & Mofro is a band that I had not seen until their performance at the Lowell Summer Music Series last month, but it was not due to a lack of desire.

I saw JJ perform as part of the Southern Soul Assembly, an acoustic quartet with JJ, Luther Dickinson, Anders Osborne, and Marc Broussard, in a show that will probably end up as one of the top ten shows of my concert year, but I had never seen him with his own band.

A Blues Show I Sadly Missed…

On Sunday, August 10th, even though I was in New York I was unable to go to the Music Makers Blues Review (a project of the Music Makers Relief Foundation), which was part of the Americana Festival at Lincoln Center Out of Doors. There were a lot of interesting names on the roster, including several who were new to me.
