Swamp Blues Masters Rocked Regattabar

A couple of years ago, I saw Sonny Landreth, one of my favorite guitarists, perform with Cindy Cashdollar (who I saw for the first time that evening) at Regattabar. It can be incredible seeing one fabulous guitarist do a solo show, but adding a second one can bring a show to a whole other. What a duo!

Hitch A Ride On Rayland Baxter’s Rising Star

I was very excited to see this show at Brighton Music Hall; I bought Rayland Baxter’s album when I was in Nashville last year (he was in the local artists section) and it has been on regular rotation on my iPod since then.

Rayland (sometimes stylized as rayLand) is an alt-country musician who has recently broken into the national scene. I believe he played at the Newport Folk Festival in 2014 or 2015, but did not release an album until last year.

Bass and Groove Masters Were In Da House

I thought I knew what to expect from Victor Wooten, the amazing bass player who coaxes notes from the strings that I have rarely heard from other bassists. I was wrong – Victor delivered a show that was mind-bending and better than any show of his I had seen. The sold-out audience at Regattabar was the lucky recipient of this goodness.

World Music’s Winter Festival Is A Winner

What a concept – throw an indoor music festival for your 25th anniversary and turn the House of Blues into festival grounds! That is exactly what World Music/CRASHarts did last weekend. I hope it is the first of many festivals for this fine organization.

Janis Joplin Has A Little Piece Of My Heart

There is a new film about Janis Joplin, the extraordinary vocal star of the 1960s who tragically died at the young age of 27, called Janis: Little Girl Blue. I was privileged to attend the Boston area première of the film at the Regent Theatre in Arlington, preceded by live music and followed by a question and answer period.
