Gangstagrass Rocks My World!

Hip-hop bluegrass you’re saying to yourself – how could that be? I said the same when I saw them on Johnny D’s schedule for April 2014. I went to the show not knowing any of their music and walked out of that show knowing I had stumbled onto something amazing.

Gangstagrass

Gangstagrass

This, my fourth Gangstagrass show and their final show at Johnny D’s (because it is closing in March 2016), was no less stellar than my first, second or third shows! And truth be told they probably get better because I know their music so well (and consider them to be friends). Prepare yourself to read a biased, glowing review!

Fine Blues Guitar Riffs Filled The Fallout Shelter

This show came at the end of a week during which I heard some incredible music, and I was tired and almost overwhelmed by the high quality of the music. Imagine my delight when I discovered that Roberto Morbioli and his band was right up there with the other shows I had seen!

Hailing from Italy, Roberto spends much time touring the United States and he was on my radar for quite a while as a musician I needed to see.

A Night Of Great Folk-Tinged Punk Rock! Or Was It Punk-Tinged Folk?

I first saw Kingsley Flood perform a number of years ago (perhaps five) at the Lowell Summer Music Series and thoroughly enjoyed their opening set. I am thrilled that their career has been on a steady rise since then, and was excited to attend this EP release show.

This year, the band released a series of EPs, the most recent of which is The Good Fight. They are based in Boston, so what better place to hold an event but The Sinclair!

A Mighty Love: Fitting Tribute For A Mighty Man

I am privileged to have been invited to cover A Mighty Love: A Tribute to Mighty Sam McClain, which was a tribute to the late great soul/blues/rhythm and blues singer who died six months ago. The all-star cast of musicians paid loving tribute to a man they called friend, mentor, and – in the case of Sandra McClain – husband. In addition, this was a benefit for charities seeking to end homelessness, a cause near and dear to Mighty Sam’s heart.

A Mighty Love

A Mighty Love

I had not seen Mighty Sam perform in a number of years (fifteen or so), so I especially loved the montage playing on the screen behind the stage as I entered the Regent Theatre. Mighty Sam was singing ‘Amazing Grace’ which brought a tear to my eyes. Bob Teague sat at a corner of the stage, playing guitar during the montage.

Gypsy Jazz Filled The House

On this evening, the night after the horrific terrorist attacks in Paris, the French band Dorado Schmitt and the Django Festival All-Stars appeared at Regattabar. They began the show with a moment of silence for the victims and also had a candle of remembrance burning on stage.

Candle of Remembrance

Candle of Remembrance

Dedicated to the gypsy jazz stylings of Django Reinhardt, Dorado bears a resemblance to Django (could it be what looks to be a false mustache that does it?).
