Huge Fun With The Grand Slambovians

It was lightly snowing and getting colder as I made my way to Johnny D’s to see one of my favorite bands, The Grand Slambovians.

Introduced to them in 2010 when they were known as Gandalf Murphy and the Slambovian Circus of Dreams, I have been following their antics (I mean musical accomplishments) ever since. I expected to have a fabulous evening, and I did.

Irish Old-Timey Bluegrass? Who Knew?

I decided to attend this show by the Irish quartet We Banjo 3 at Johnny D’s (part of the World Music schedule) because the combination of Irish music and bluegrass sounded irresistible. My intuition turned out to be accurate – this was a fantastic show!

We Banjo 3

I did not have a hard time imagining how Irish old-timey bluegrass music would sound, but I had no idea it would be as fabulous as is was! The band, at its first show ever in the Boston area, played to an enthusiastic sold-out crowd and stunned us with their talent and wit. I got the impression that they were surprised to have sold out the venue!

An Intimate Performance By Joan Osborne

I was excited to see Joan Osborne at Johnny D’s recently; I saw her perform a couple of times with Trigger Hippy, but had never seen her perform only her music. This seemed to be a rare opportunity to see her in a small club where the intimate nature of her new album could be highlighted.

Jorma Kaukonen Deserves His Legendary Status

Everyone in the audience eagerly anticipated Jorma Kaukonen‘s appearance at The Extended Play Sessions last week; Jorma is certainly the best-known musician to have graced the stage at the Sessions.

The crowd was buzzing with excitement as Jorma and Barry Mitterhoff took the stage for the show, but quickly became silent as the first notes wafted from their guitars.

Bettye LaVette Is Definitely Worthy

Bettye LaVette delivers some of the most emotional performances I have been privileged to see, and her show last night at Regattabar was no exception.

You could have heard a pin drop in the club; everyone was wrapped in her aura. I think there were probably more than a few tears shed during some of the more soulful songs.

Funky Jazz or Jazzy Funk? Or Something Altogether Different?

DRKWV, as this Regattabar show was billed, is a collaboration of keyboardist John Medeski, saxophonist Skerik, and drummer Adam Deitch and I was quite curious to see what they are doing as a trio.

I know DRKWV’s music will not appeal to everyone, but if you like avant-garde jazz and funk or if you merely love extremely good musicians, you’ll find this project interesting at the very least.

Acoustic Blues Master Eric Bibb Beguiled

As soon as I saw that Eric Bibb would perform at Regattabar, I made sure I would be in the audience. Eric lives in Finland and does not tour the United States frequently, which made this a relatively rare appearance.

I first saw Eric perform a couple of years ago when he toured with Habib Koité, one of my favorite Malian musicians; I was familiar with Eric in name only prior to that show, but his performance convinced me to put him on my radar.
