An Evening With Freddy Cole

When I read that Freddy Cole would appear at Regattabar, I knew I had to be in the audience. I never had the chance to see his famous older brother, Nat King, because I was too young when he died at a young age but I did not want to miss Freddy and have any regrets about it.

I am happy I attended one of his shows; Freddy may be 83 years young, but his piano playing is still top-notch and his voice lovely.

A Crazy Great Jazz Show

I am a huge fan of the jazz guitar great Mike Stern. Even though I had seen him perform a number of times, I had never seen him with his own band until last weekend when I attended the last of his four sold-out (or nearly sold-out) shows at Regattabar.

Mike is an incredible performer in terms of both his talent and his performance style.

Fabulous Jazz Jam At Regattabar

I love jazz generally and knew that Vijay Iyer has a devoted following, so I did not hesitate to see one of his four Regattabar shows last weekend even though I was only slightly familiar with his music.  Saying that I was in awe of the performance is an understatement – he and the rest of his trio are incredible!

The show I attended was the last of the four; if they were tired, it did not seep into their performance which appeared flawless!

Kyle Eastwood Delivered A Solid Performance

Kyle Eastwood, a talented jazz bassist and composer, is not merely trading on his family name (yes, his father is Clint). I took a chance when I decided to see him perform at Regattabar last week, and I am delighted I did.

I did not know, but should have realized, that Kyle was raised with much music in his life and it shows. He clearly has a passion for the jazz tradition.

Seminal Jazz Guitarist John Abercrombie Enthralled

I knew John Abercrombie‘s reputation but had never seem him perform, so I jumped at the opportunity to see him at Regattabar last weekend.

This was an excellent performance, made better by the absence of pretense and showmanship. Read the rest of this entry

Funky Jazz or Jazzy Funk? Or Something Altogether Different?

DRKWV, as this Regattabar show was billed, is a collaboration of keyboardist John Medeski, saxophonist Skerik, and drummer Adam Deitch and I was quite curious to see what they are doing as a trio.

I know DRKWV’s music will not appeal to everyone, but if you like avant-garde jazz and funk or if you merely love extremely good musicians, you’ll find this project interesting at the very least.

The Whole of Eric Johnson and Mike Stern is Greater Than the Sum of Its Parts…

And each part – Mike Stern and Eric Johnson – is incredible on its own! Together, they are formidable.

Last year, I saw Mike and Eric at two of their four Regattabar shows and they were my top shows of 2013. When they announced this tour in support of their collaborative album, ‘Eclectic’, I knew I would see at least one of the shows in the Boston area. I was extremely lucky to be able to see their shows at both The Wilbur Theatre and Tupelo Music Hall! (Note there is one Boston-area show remaining and it is not sold out yet – Tuesday, November 18th at The Narrows Center for the Arts.)
