An Evening at a Rare Jazz Performance
Posted by suze72
When I decided to spend an evening at Regattabar listening to the Swallow Talmor Nussbaum Trio, I had no idea that I was in for a rare treat.
Composed of Steve Swallow on bass, Ohad Talmor on saxophone and Adam Nussbaum on drums, this trio does not perform often so I knew I had to see this show.

Fascinating Pandeiro Jazz Show
Posted by suze72
I did not know what a pandeiro was when I booked this show, but the idea of hearing a Brazilian percussion instrument alongside guitar and piano playing music that combines Brazilian music and jazz fascinated me.
Scott Feiner & Pandeiro Jazz performed at Regattabar last weekend to an enthusiastic audience.
Jazz Multiplied By Classical Equals A Great Show

Paquito D’Rivera, the wonderful Latin Jazz saxophonist, has been making music for many years, but I had never seen him perform until the show last weekend at Regattabar.
Paquito entertained the sold-out house for more than 90 minutes, and I got the feeling he would have kept playing had they not needed to clear the room for the second set (they played two more songs after they were told they could play one).

Diane Schuur, Enchanting Songstress
Posted by suze72
This weekend, Regattabar hosted the enchanting Diane Schuur on the heels of the release of her latest album “I Remember You, With Love to Stan [Getz] and Frank [Sinatra]”.
What an entertainer she is! From the moment she took the stage, she regaled us with great songs, funny quips, and marvelous piano-playing.

Marvelous Blend of African Music And Jazz
Posted by suze72
I love both African music and jazz; Felipe Salles integrated the two styles to create something new and exhilarating!
Felipe and his band held a CD release show at Regattabar last night and I was fortunate to be in the audience for the excellent show.
AJ Croce Crosses Genres

When I heard that A.J. Croce was appearing at Regattabar last week, I knew I needed to attend his show.
Yes, he is the son of Jim Croce who was one of the singer-songwriters I loved in my teens (and who died tragically in a plane crash at the age of 30). A.J., however, has a style that I find very different from his father’s pop/folk-rock style.

A Wonderfully Perfect Jazz Storm
Posted by suze72
There are times – they don’t occur often – when every aspect of an evening converges to produce perfection. Last night’s Kevin Harris Project show at Regattabar provided such an evening.
I was not familiar with Kevin Harris. To be honest, I had a hole in my schedule that I wanted to fill with some good music, and this show sounded intriguing. That is quite an understatement!
Al Kooper, A Blast From My Past

When I was in a band in high school in 1970 – Iron Majesty was its name (and no, you’ve never heard of it) – our biggest influence was Blood Sweat and Tears and their first album, Child is Father to the Man. That was the only one of BS&T’s early albums on which Al Kooper performed.
Al is touring this year to mark his 70th birthday, and he made a stop at Regattabar this weekend. I did not want to miss one of these shows. Read the rest of this entry →
SFJAZZ Collective: A Unique Concept
Posted by suze72
I was expecting an interesting evening of music from the SFJAZZ Collective, but I had no idea just how much fun it would be.
The concept seems simple: each year since their inception ten years ago, they chose a modern jazz composer (Chick Corea, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, and Stevie Wonder, to name a few) and performed work by that composer as well as new work composed by the members of the Collective.
Ron Carter Leads a Supergroup at Regattabar

I spent another evening at Regattabar listening to a group of incredible jazz musicians perform for a sold-out crowd.
I was very excited to see this show; some friends had seen the show the week before in New York and loved it. Read the rest of this entry →
