ZUMIX Closes Its 25th Anniversary Year With A Fundraiser By Boston DJs

[Boston, MA – February 21, 2017] “It’s been a busy and rich quarter century for the creative youth development East Boston nonprofit ZUMIX. Founded in 1991, its leaders set out to empower youth through music to make strong positive change in their lives, their communities, and the world. At the 25 year mark,  ZUMIX celebrates many milestones including serving over 10,000 youth and becoming the “second home” for many; winning the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award in 2011, presented by First Lady Michelle Obama; expanding into its 3-floor Firehouse location which houses its many types of music instruction, a state of the art recording studio and an all ages live concert venue; and in September 2016, after 10 years of streaming its youth radio station online, launched 94.9 ZUMIX Radio, a community radio station. Further, last year Boston Landmark’s Orchestra commissioned Grammy-nominated composer Gonzalo Grau to work with ZUMIX students over 8 months, culminating with a live concert performance on Boston’s Hatch Shell.

John Scofield Plays Country Music? Yes, He Does!

I know John Scofield‘s jazz as well as his work with Medeski Martin and Wood, and was intrigued enough when I read the description of this project to attend a show at Regattabar (one of four that weekend). I am so glad I did!

Go See Girls Guns And Glory Now!

I was quite excited for the Girls Guns and Glory show at The Sinclair recently. Not only is this one of my favorite bands, but Julie Rhodes – another favorite – opened the show! How great is it to be able to see friends knock it out of the park at a wonderful venue with an alleviating audience that was large despite competing with a Patriots playoff game!

An Evening Of Extraordinary Music

The On Stage! Series at The Chevalier Theatre was an ideal venue to host the incredible Shun Ng and the Shunettes on a lovely winter evening. This series seats around one hundred people at cloth-covered tables on the stage along with the musicians.

Shun Ng and the Shunettes

Shun Ng and the Shunettes

I am extremely familiar with Shun and his superb guitar playing, but have only seen him with the Shunettes (Deon Mose and Angel Chisholm) a couple of times (including a very cold New Year’s Day outdoor show). I am almost at a loss for words to describe the power of these artists.
