Tribute to Linda Ronstadt Rocked (Yes, Rocked)

I know it’s hard to believe that a tribute to the songs of Linda Ronstadt, the fabulous singer whose career has been cut short by Parkinson’s disease, could rock, but rock it did at Johnny D’s last week.

People danced throughout the show, even, as Jenny Dee noted, to ‘Carmelita’ which is a song about heroin! Read the rest of this entry

JLW’s Electric Blues Rocked the House

I walked into Regattabar the other night knowing only that Joe Louis Walker is a blues legend. What I heard and saw were the reasons why he has been nominated for Grammy Awards and is a member of the Blues Hall of Fame.

JLW, as he is known, delivered a terrific show, full of energy and passion.

Exciting News!

As of today, I am the Correspondent in the Boston area for a new program on No Depression, a wonderful magazine dedicated to all things roots music! Called ND Roots, I am partnered with Club Passim in Cambridge, and will be bringing you reviews of many shows.

For these shows, the reviews can be accessed through my page on ND Roots and photographs will be posted on this website. I will provide links from each to the other so you dear readers will not miss anything!

I am thrilled to be part of this new program. To quote Kim Ruehl, editor of No Depression, ‘I am the most important voice on live Americana/roots music in the Boston area!’ Thanks Kim!

My first two reviews are here:  Driftwood and Noel Paul Stookey.

Three Incredible Singer-Songwriters Warmed A Cold Winter’s Night

I attended my first house concert – the Fox Run Concert Series – because of the strength of the performers; I also heard they can be very cool. Mark Erelli, Charlie Rose, and Susan Cattaneo are musicians I saw perform at least once each last year and was impressed each time. This opportunity to see them in an intimate setting – my guess is that there were 40-50 people in attendance – was one I could not forgo.

High-Energy Funk from Barrence Whitfield

The last time – really, the only time – I saw Barrence Whitfield perform was about twenty years ago. It seemed that shortly after, his name disappeared from my radar until the past couple of years. This is a long overdue comeback (for me, at least), because he is a fine R&B/soul/funk singer.

I was excited to be able to see him at Bull Run, a venue I enjoy quite a bit. Read the rest of this entry

What a Way to Start 2015 – Girls Guns and Glory!

Several friends told me how much they enjoy Girls Guns and Glory, a Boston-based country-rock band, but I’d not yet seen them perform. Every year around the new year, they perform a Hank Williams tribute show and I was fortunate to see one of the sold-out shows at Lizard Lounge!
