Warren Haynes Continues To Amaze His Fans

I have been a fan of Warren Haynes for a number of years, since I first saw him with The Allman Brothers Band in the early 1990s. He is a terrific guitarist who plays a wide range of styles, from Southern rock to blues and now to Americana. The current tour entitled Ashes & Dust stopped at the Orpheum Theatre this week where he played to a smaller-than-he-deserved crowd.

I believe his versatility plays a huge role in his popularity; if one does not like one of Warren’s projects, one is sure to like another one. This tour might have the broadest appeal of his projects to date, with the possible exception of The Allman Brothers Band. I adored this show, and only wish it had started earlier in the evening!

A Rare Solo Acoustic (!) Performance By Mr. Warren Haynes

It was a treat to know that the Lowell Summer Music Series would host the only solo appearance by Warren Haynes on the current tour, and even more of a treat to be in the audience for this show.

Haynes is widely regarded as one of the finest guitarists ever (number 23 on one of  Rolling Stone‘s top 100 lists), and it is well deserved.

Darlingside Is A Hit At The Armory

When I was introduced to Darlingside a couple of years ago at the Outside the Box Festival (an incredible free festival which is returning to Boston this summer), I remarked that I had discovered my new favorite band. I now see them whenever I can, most recently at Arts at the Armory. Yes, it’s an old armory which has been converted to an up-and-coming arts center.

Darlingside

This Boston-based band has developed a devoted following over the past few years that I have no doubt will continue to grow as they headline larger venues; this show was promoted by Bowery Boston which I hope will prove to be a lucrative relationship for Darlingside.

Grammy-Winner Shelby Lynne Enchants

Shelby Lynne may have made her name as a country musician, but her performance at Johnny D’s a few days ago showed that she is a versatile singer-songwriter who is firmly ensconced in the broader category of American roots music.

This was the first stop on Shelby’s tour to promote her new album, I Can’t Imagine, produced by Massachusetts’ own Rounder Records and released two days prior to this show.

Up-And-Coming Retro Majestic Indie Rock Act Delivers A Solid Performance

I may be a bit biased when it comes to Laney Jones and the Spirits because they are friends, but I watched the reaction of the audience at the Extended Play Sessions where they performed on Friday night and saw that everyone in the room was as enthralled with this band as I am. Phew!

Laney Jones

Laney Jones

You may wonder what ‘retro majestic indie rock’ (Laney’s self-description) is; my answer to that is that you should listen to the band’s new music which is not yet out on an album. Here’s a video of one of the songs performed at this Session.
