The Howlin’ Brothers Deliver Foot-Stomping Good Music!

I was prepared to enjoy The Howlin’ Brothers at the Extended Play Sessions at Alternate Root TV, but I had no idea just how much! In fact, I enjoyed them so much I saw them a few days later at Atwood’s Tavern!

The announcement for the show promised a foot-stompin’, loud hollerin’ show, and the Brothers delivered just that (with emphasis on the foot stomping).

Wisewater Entertained and Enchanted

I expected the Wisewater show to be a good one at an Extended Play Session for Alternate Root TV; one of the members, Forrest O’Connor, is the son of fiddler extraordinaire Mark O’Connor. This review will not focus on that, other than to say Forrest’s apple lands right under his father’s tree yet he is a completely different musician.

Wisewater bills itself as country pop; while that is accurate, I bristle at the term ‘pop’ so I won’t use it here. Read the rest of this entry

I Never Imagined I Would Spend an Afternoon in a Honky-Tonk and Love It!

Ten years ago, I would have told you I did not like country music. Two weeks ago, I voluntarily went to Robert’s Western World, the most authentic honky-tonk in Nashville, and had a terrific afternoon there!

I was advised by a number of Nashvillians that Robert’s is the only honky-tonk that natives visit because it is the only one that still delivers authentic and traditional country music. Naturally, I headed straight for it when I was in The District.

Check The Ryman Off My Bucket List!

I am a very lucky woman indeed to have been able to see an icon like Merle Haggard perform at the iconic Ryman Auditorium!

As soon as I saw the concert announcement, I knew I had to grab a ticket quickly. It was good that I did because the two shows sold out very quickly. Read the rest of this entry

We’re Not From Texas, Lyle, But We Want You Anyway!

Last weekend marked Lyle Lovett‘s third appearance at the Lowell Summer Music Series – twice with his Large Band and once with his smaller Acoustic Group. The Large Band graced the stage at Boarding House Park for this show.

I will take Lyle any way I can – he has incredible stage presence and (at least at his Lowell shows) obviously loves what he is doing. Overall, though, I prefer the Large Band because of the depth and range of the instrumentality.  Read the rest of this entry

Rosanne Cash’s Apple Did Not Fall Far From The Family Tree

Rosanne Cash is yet another artist with whom I was familiar in name only, but when I saw that she was going to perform at the Prescott Park Arts Festival I knew I had to see her.

What a glorious evening it was! The weather was perfect – sunny and not hot or humid – as was the music for my first time at this series.

As If Willie Nelson and Alison Krauss Weren’t Enough…

I had fairly high expectations seeing Willie Nelson for the first time and Alison Krauss and Union Station for (I believe) the second time, and the reality far surpassed them!

The Blue Hills Bank Pavilion is not my favorite venue (the sound is uneven at best), but even that was not enough to negatively impact the show. Read the rest of this entry

A Little Bit Of Nashville Rocked This Session

One of the aspects of the Extended Play Sessions at The Alternate Root TV that I am most enjoying is the introduction of new artists to me. Amelia White and Sergio Webb are two such artists.

I am starting to learn about the Nashville – and more particularly East Nashville – music scene because that is one of the places where a lot of amazing new music is being made. Read the rest of this entry

Mary Gauthier Proved The Power Of Song

In a word, wow! On the day her newest album ‘Trouble & Love’ was released, Mary Gauthier performed at the Extended Play Sessions of Alternate Root TV.

Country Twang Rocked The House

Ten years ago if you had asked me what kind of music I disliked, I would have answered, “country.” Now, I can’t seem to get enough high-quality country music (for me, the genre includes alt-country, country rock, country blues).
